According to The Center for Disease Control, 30.3% of children age 6 to 11 years are overweight and 15.3% are obese, and 30.4% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years are overweight and 15.5% are obese. These youth and children have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. They are also at risk for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Type 2 diabetes, once considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and youth that are overweight. These overweight children and youth are usually discriminated socially and suffer from poor self-esteem and depression.

Percentile of Body Mass Index (BMI)

Doctors and other health professionals are the best individuals to determine if a child or adolescent’s weight is within a healthy range.  A Body Mass Index (BMI) is determined by a calculation from measurements of height and weight.  The American Obesity Association and The Centers for Disease Control uses 85th percentile of BMI (BMI of 25 in adults) as reference for overweight and 95th percentile of BMI (BMI of 30 in adults) for obesity.
