The American Obesity Association states that a decrease in physical activity contributes to the highest percentage of overweight and obesity today. Behavior therapy that includes a moderate reduction of calories and moderate physical activity most to all days of the week is recommended.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Health professionals use Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if an individual is at their idea weight. The BMI is determined by a calculation from measurements of height and weight. A BMI of 25 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 is considered obese in adults.

Six Steps to Exercise Success

Before beginning any exercise program, make sure that exercise is safe for you. If you are male over the age of 40 or female over the age of 50, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise program. List the pros and cons of starting an exercise program. If you do not believe that the benefits out weigh the cost, then you will have a difficult time sticking to a program.

Determine your current level of fitness.

Based on the information in steps one and two set goals for your fitness program. These goals must be specific and measurable so you can more effectively track your progress.

Select activities in your fitness program that will improve cardiograms endurance, strength, and flexibility.

With each activity select a target intensity, duration, and frequency.

Work the plan, start your program and monitor your progress.
